Indeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allah at all, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

The explanation of His word, the Exalted: وَمَا يَفْعَلُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَلَنْ يُكْفَرُوهُ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِالْمُتَّقِينَ (115) ("And whatever good they do, it will never be denied them ungratefully; and Allah is All-Knowing of the God-fearing.") (3:115)
Abū Jaʿfar said: The reciters differed over the reading of this.
The general reciters of Kūfa read it: (وَمَا يَفْعَلُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَلَنْ يُكْفَرُوهُ) — both words in the third person (with yāʾ) — referring back to the description of the people whom He, exalted be His praise, described as those who enjoin what is proper and forbid what is reprehensible.
The general reciters of Medina and the Ḥijāz, and some reciters of Kūfa, read both words in the second person (with tāʾ): ("وَمَا تَفْعَلُوا مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَلَنْ تُكْفَروهُ"), with the meaning: and whatever good you do, O believers, your Lord will not deny it to you ungratefully.

Some reciters of Baṣra considered both readings herein permissible, with the yāʾ and with the tāʾ, in both words.

Abū Jaʿfar said: The correct reading of this is, in our judgment: "wa-mā yafʿalū min khayrin fa-lan yukfarūh", with the yāʾ in both words, by which is intended the report concerning the steadfast community that recites the signs of Allah.
We have preferred this because the verses that precede this verse are a report about them. Joining this verse — since there is in it no indication pointing to a turning away from their description — to the meanings of the preceding verses is more deserving of preference than turning it away from the meanings of what precedes it. And according to the reading which we preferred, Ibn ʿAbbās recited.
7664 — Aḥmad ibn Yūsuf al-Taghlibī related to me, saying: Al-Qāsim ibn Sallām related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to us, on the authority of Hārūn, on the authority of Abū ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, who said: It reached me concerning Ibn ʿAbbās that he read both words with the yāʾ.

Abū Jaʿfar said: The interpretation of the verse, then, according to the reading which we preferred, is: And whatever good this community does, and whatever deed it performs in which there lies for Allah good pleasure, Allah will not deny it to them ungratefully; by this is meant: Allah will not nullify the reward for that deed of theirs, and will not leave them without recompense for it from Himself, but He will bestow upon them abundantly the reward for it and will lavishly apportion to them the honor and the recompense.

We have already shown previously, with the proofs for it, what the meaning of "kufr" (denying ungratefully / covering over) is, and that its origin is the covering over of something.

So too is His word "fa-lan yukfarūh": what they have performed of good will not be covered over so that they would be left without recompense, but they will receive thanks for what they did of it, and the reward for it will be bestowed upon them lavishly.

And in accordance with what we have said concerning the interpretation, those of the exegetes who interpreted this interpreted it.

7665 — Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: "And whatever good you do, it will not be denied you ungratefully", he says: it will not escape you.
7666 — It was related to me on the authority of ʿAmmār, who said: Ibn Abī Jaʿfar related to us, on the authority of his father, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ, the like of it.

And as for His word "and Allah is All-Knowing of the God-fearing", He, exalted be His mention, says: And Allah possesses knowledge of who fears Him, by obeying Him and refraining from disobedience to Him, and He preserves their good deeds until He rewards them for them and recompenses them for them — as glad tidings from Him to them, exalted be His mention, in the near worldly life, and as an exhortation to them to hold fast to that which they are upon of the good morals which He has deemed pleasing for them.
