The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: And those who strive (jāhadū) for Our sake, We shall surely guide them upon Our paths; and verily, Allah is with those who do good (al-muḥsinīn) (69).
The Exalted, whose remembrance is sublime, says: and those who fought (qātalū) for Our sake against these people — those who fabricate lies against Allah, namely the unbelievers (kuffār) of the Quraysh, who denied the truth when it came to them — while by their fighting they sought the exaltation of Our word and the victory of Our religion, We shall surely guide them upon Our paths. He says: We shall grant them the favor of attaining the straight path, and that is the attainment of the religion of Allah, which is Islam, with which Allah sent Muḥammad ﷺ. And verily, Allah is with those who do good — He says: and verily, Allah is with whoever among His creatures does good and therein fights the people of associating partners (shirk), while confirming His Messenger in what he brought from Allah, by aiding him and helping him against those enemies of his whom he fights.
And in keeping with what we have said in the explanation of His saying: And those who strive for Our sake, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) have spoken.
* Mention of who said that:
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning His saying: And those who strive for Our sake — then I said to him: those who fought for Our sake? He said: yes.
