And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself. Indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.

His statement: ( وَمَنْ جَاهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَاهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِ ) ("And whoever strives (jihād), strives only for himself"). He says: and whoever fights his enemy among the polytheists (mushrikīn) strives only for himself; for he does that in pursuit of Allah's reward for his striving and out of fear of the punishment. Allah, then, has no need of his performing that deed, and that is because Allah is independent of all His creatures: to Him belong the sovereignty, the creation, and the command.
