The explanation of the saying of the Exalted: En naar Madyan hun broeder Shuʿayb, en hij zei: O mijn volk, aanbid Allah en verwacht de Laatste Dag en richt geen verderf aan op de aarde (29:36).

The Exalted, whose mention is exalted, says: and I sent to Madyan their brother Shuʿayb, and he said to them: O my people, worship Allah alone, and submit to Him through obedience, and bow down humbly before Him in worship. And expect the Last Day says: and expect, through your worship of Me, the reward of the Last Day, and that is the Day of Resurrection. And do not cause corruption upon the earth says: and do not increase disobedience toward Allah upon the earth, and do not persist in it, but turn back from it to Allah in repentance and turn to Him.

Some of the scholars of the Arabic language interpreted His saying And expect the Last Day in the meaning of: fear the Last Day. But others among the language scholars rejected that and said: we have not found "al-rajāʾ" (expectation, hope) in the meaning of "al-khawf" (fear) in the language of the Arabs, except when it is accompanied by a negation.
