The explanation of the statement of the Exalted: فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ الرَّجْفَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ (37) (But they denied him, whereupon the earthquake seized them, and they lay prostrate (dead) in their dwelling. (29:37))

The Exalted, whose remembrance is lofty, says: the people of Madyan denied Shuʿayb in that which he brought them from Allah as a message, whereupon the earthquake of the punishment seized them, فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ (and they lay prostrate in their dwelling) — crouched down, one upon another, like dead men.

As Bishr related to us; he said: Yazīd related to us; he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda: فَأَصْبَحُوا فِي دَارِهِمْ جَاثِمِينَ — that is to say: like dead men.
