The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, the Exalted: وَرَبُّكَ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُكِنُّ صُدُورُهُمْ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ ("And your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they make public") (69)

Allah, exalted is His mention, says: and your Lord, O Muḥammad, knows what the breasts of His creatures conceal. It is derived from "akkantu al-shayʾ fī ṣadrī" — when one keeps something hidden therein; and "kanantu al-shayʾ" — when one protects something. ( وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ ) ("and what they make public"): He says: and what they display with their tongues and their limbs. By this is meant only that His choosing of whomever He chooses among them for belief in Him occurs on the basis of His knowledge of the hidden matters of their affairs and what of them is overt, and that He chooses for the good its people and enables them for it, and that He assigns the evil to its people and leaves them to it.
