And it will be said, "Invoke your 'partners' " and they will invoke them; but they will not respond to them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had followed guidance!

The explanation of His word, the Exalted: وَقِيلَ ادْعُوا شُرَكَاءَكُمْ فَدَعَوْهُمْ فَلَمْ يَسْتَجِيبُوا لَهُمْ وَرَأَوُا الْعَذَابَ لَوْ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَهْتَدُونَ (64) ("And it will be said: 'Call upon your associate-partners!' Then they will call upon them, but they will not answer them, and they will behold the punishment. If only they had followed the right way!") (28:64)
The Exalted, whose praise is exalted, says: And to those who in the worldly life called upon gods and rivals besides Allah, it will be said: "Call upon your associate-partners" — those whom you used to call upon besides Allah — "then they will call upon them, but they will not answer them." He says: then they will give them no answer; "and they will behold the punishment (ʿadhāb)." He says: and they will perceive the punishment with their own eyes; "If only they had followed the right way!" He says: then, when they behold the punishment, they will wish that they had been rightly guided to the truth in the worldly life.
