His saying: حَتَّى إِذَا جَاءُوا قَالَ أَكَذَّبْتُمْ بِآيَاتِي — Allah the Exalted says: until, when there has come from every community a group of those who deny Our signs and they have been gathered together, Allah says: أَكَذَّبْتُمْ بِآيَاتِي — that is to say: with My proofs and My arguments — وَلَمْ تُحِيطُوا بِهَا عِلْمًا — "while you did not comprehend them in knowledge according to their worth" — that is to say: you did not know them as they truly ought to be known — أَمْ مَاذَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ — "or what was it that you were doing" — thereby: of denying or holding to be credible.
