Allah the Exalted says: وَمَا مِنْ غَائِبَةٍ — "There is no hidden thing" — that is to say: there is no concealed secret and no hidden matter that withdraws itself from the eyes of the beholders فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالأرْضِ إِلا فِي كِتَابٍ — "in the heaven and on the earth, but it is in a Book" — that is the Mother of the Scriptures (Umm al-Kitāb), in which our Lord has recorded everything that shall come to pass, from the beginning of His creation until the Day of Resurrection. By His word مُبِينٍ — "clear" — He means that it makes clear to whoever beholds and reads it what our Lord, exalted be His praise, has recorded therein.
In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes of the Qurʾān spoke.
Mention of those who said this:
Muḥammad ibn Saʿd related to me, he said: my father related to me, he said: my uncle related to me, he said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word: وَمَا مِنْ غَائِبَةٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالأرْضِ إِلا فِي كِتَابٍ مُبِينٍ — he said: there is nothing in the heaven and on the earth, secret nor manifest, but that He has knowledge of it.
