وَأَنْجَيْنَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ('and We saved those who believed'): he says: We saved from Our vengeance and Our punishment which We sent down upon Thamūd Our messenger Ṣāliḥ and those who believed in him. وَكَانُوا يَتَّقُونَ ('and they used to be God-fearing'): he says: through their faith and their affirmation of Ṣāliḥ they were spared from what Allah's punishment of their people of Thamūd sent down. Likewise We shall save you, O Muḥammad, and your followers when We send down Our punishment upon the polytheists (mushrikīn) of your people while they are in their midst.

It has been transmitted that Ṣāliḥ, when Allah sent down upon his people what He sent down, set out with the believers who followed him to the Levant and settled in the sand dunes of Palestine.
