Allah, exalted is His remembrance, means by His words فَتِلْكَ بُيُوتُهُمْ خَاوِيَةً ('these are their houses, empty and deserted'): these are their dwellings, empty and abandoned by them, with none of them remaining in them; Allah destroyed and annihilated them. بِمَا ظَلَمُوا ('because of the wrong they committed'): Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says: because of the wrong they did to themselves by assigning partners to Allah (shirk) and denying their messenger. إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لآيَةً لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ ('therein is indeed a sign for a people who have knowledge'): Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says: in Our dealing with Thamūd — as We have told you, O Muḥammad, the story — is an admonition for whoever knows what We did with them, from your people who deny you in what you have brought them from your Lord, and a lesson.
