And His word: فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا هُمْ وَالْغَاوُونَ (They are flung into it, they and the deviant ones) — he says: they were flung down upon one another in Hellfire (al-jaḥīm), one upon the other, and one was thrown face-down upon the other. The original form of "kubbikū" is "kubbū," but the kāf was repeated, just as it was said: بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ — what is meant is "ṣarr"; and "nahnahni yunhanhani" — what is meant is "nahahni."

In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes also spoke.

Mention of those who said that:

Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying — Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word: فَكُبْكِبُوا — he said: they were cast down headlong.

ʿAlī related to me, saying: Abū Ṣāliḥ related to us, saying: Muʿāwiyah related to me, on the authority of ʿAlī, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning his word: فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا — he said: they were herded together into it.

Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning his word: فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا — he said: they were flung into it. The meaning of the words is then: these objects set up as equals, which were worshipped besides Allah, were flung into Hellfire, together with the deviant ones.

It is related from Qatāda that he used to say that the deviant ones in this place are the devils.

Mention of the narration of those who said that:

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his word: فَكُبْكِبُوا فِيهَا هُمْ وَالْغَاوُونَ — he said: the deviant ones: the devils.

The meaning of the words is therefore, according to this view which we have related from Qatāda: the unbelievers who worshipped the idols and the devils besides Allah were flung into Hellfire.
