And His word: إِلا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ (Except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart) — he says: and do not disgrace me on the day when they are resurrected — the day on which nothing avails except the sound heart.

What is meant by the soundness of the heart in this place is: the soundness of the heart with respect to doubt concerning the oneness of Allah and the Resurrection after death.

In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes also spoke.

    Mention of who said that:

Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm related to me, he said: Ibn ʿUlayya related to us, on the authority of ʿAwn, who said: I asked Muḥammad: what is the sound heart? He said: that one knows that Allah is the Truth, that the Hour is coming, and that Allah will resurrect those who are in the graves.

Ibn Bashshār related to us, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Layth, on the authority of Mujāhid — concerning إِلا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ — he said: without doubt therein.

Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning his word: إِلا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ — he said: there is no doubt in it regarding the Truth.

Al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, he said: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning his word: بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ — he said: sound from ascribing partners to Allah (shirk).

Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said — concerning إِلا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ — he said: sound from shirk; as for the sins — no one is spared from them.

ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Āmulī related to me, he said: Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah related to us, on the authority of Juwaybir, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, concerning the word of Allah: إِلا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ — he said: it is the pure heart.
