Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

Allah, exalted be His mention, says: فَأَلْقَى مُوسَى عَصَاهُ (Moses cast down his staff) after the sorcerers had cast down their ropes and staffs. فَإِذَا هِيَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ (And behold, it swallowed up what they had falsely produced) — that is to say: the staff of Moses swallowed up the falsehood and sorcery they had brought forth, which had no reality underlying it; it was merely illusory appearances (makhāyīl) and deception.
