[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.

The Exalted says in His remembrance: Pharaoh said, after Mūsā had shown him the tremendous power of Allah and His sovereignty as a proof against him for the reality of that which he was calling him to believe and for the truthfulness of what he had brought him from his Lord, لِلْمَلَإِ حَوْلَهُ (to the eminent ones around him) — that is: to the nobles of his people who were around him — إِنَّ هَذَا لَسَاحِرٌ عَلِيمٌ (Truly, this is a most learned sorcerer) — He said: Mūsā has bewitched his staff so that he showed it to you as a serpent. عَلِيمٌ — He said: skilled in sorcery and having insight into it. يُرِيدُ أَنْ يُخْرِجَكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِ (he wishes to drive you out of your land by his sorcery) — He said: he wishes to drive the Children of Israel out of your land to Syria by overcoming you with sorcery.
