Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, who said: When this verse came down, he began with his own household and his nearest relatives. He said: That weighed heavily upon the Muslims, whereupon Allah, the Exalted, revealed: وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ.
His word: وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ — that is to say: be gentle in your dealings and your speech لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ — toward those who follow you among the believers.
As Yūnus related to me: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said, concerning the word وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ: he said: be gentle toward them.
