He says: "The devils are truly cut off from listening to the Qurʾān at the place where it is in the heaven — so how could they be able to descend with it?"

And in accordance with what we have said in the explanation of this, the exegetes spoke.

    * Mention of who said this: *

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ — he said: "This Qurʾān." And concerning His word إِنَّهُمْ عَنِ السَّمْعِ لَمَعْزُولُونَ — he said: "From listening to the heaven."

Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Abū Sufyān related to me, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda — the like of it, except that he said: "From listening to the Qurʾān."

The Qurʾān-reciters are in agreement on the reading وَمَا تَنَزَّلَتْ بِهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ — with the tāʾ and with the nūn in the nominative, for it is an original nūn: the singular is Shayṭān, just as the singular of al-Basātīn is Bustān. From al-Ḥasan it is related that he used to read: "wa-mā tanazzalat bihi al-Shayāṭūn" — with the wāw; but this is a linguistic error, and if it is indeed authentically from him, he must have supposed it to be like al-Muslimīn and al-Muʾminīn; but that is far removed from the case.
