against them, namely the killing of the soul that he had killed among them.
And in agreement with what we have said concerning this, the people of interpretation (ahl al-taʾwīl) spoke.
* Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to me; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both of them — on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word: وَلَهُمْ عَلَيَّ ذَنْبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَنْ يَقْتُلُونِ (And they have a charge against me for a sin, so I fear that they will kill me), he said: the killing of the soul that he had killed among them.
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to me, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, he said: the killing by Mūsā of the soul.
He said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Abū Sufyān related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word: وَلَهُمْ عَلَيَّ ذَنْبٌ (And they have a charge against me for a sin), he said: the killing of the soul.
And His word: فَأَخَافُ أَنْ يَقْتُلُونِ (so I fear that they will kill me), He says: so I fear that they will kill me by way of retaliation (qawad) for the soul that I had killed among them.
The statement concerning the interpretation of His word, exalted is He: قَالَ كَلَّا فَاذْهَبَا بِآيَاتِنَا إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ مُسْتَمِعُونَ (١٥) فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَا إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (١٦) أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ (١٧) (He said: By no means! Go then, both of you, with Our signs; We are with you, listening (15). Go then, both of you, to Firʿawn (Pharaoh) and say: We are the messenger of the Lord of the worlds (16), that you send with us the Children of Israel (17)).
He, exalted is His mention, says: كَلَّا (By no means): that is to say, the people of Firʿawn will not kill you. فَاذْهَبَا بِآيَاتِنَا (Go then, both of you, with Our signs), He says: go then, you and your brother, with Our signs, that is, with Our evidentiary signs and Our proofs which We have given you against them. And His word: إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ مُسْتَمِعُونَ (We are with you, listening) to the people of Firʿawn as to what they say to you and with what they answer you. And His word: فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَا (Go then, both of you, to Firʿawn and say) ... the rest of the verse, He says: come then, you O Mūsā and your brother Hārūn, to Firʿawn. فَقُولَا إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ (And say: We are the messenger of the Lord of the worlds) to you, with أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ (that you send with us the Children of Israel). And He said "the messenger (rasūl) of the Lord of the worlds" while addressing two persons with His word "say" (fa-qūlā), because by it He intended the verbal noun (maṣdar) of arsaltu; one says: "arsaltu risālatan" and "rasūlan" (I sent a message and an envoy), as the poet said:
Truly, the slanderers have lied; I uttered nothing evil concerning them ... nor did I send them with a message (rasūl).
