Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ibn ʿAbbās said concerning the word of Allah فَلَا تُطِعِ الْكَافِرِينَ وَجَاهِدْهُمْ بِهِ (so do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qurʾān): he said: "with the Qurʾān."
And others said concerning this what was related to me by Yūnus, who said: Ibn Wahb informed us, who said: Ibn Zayd said concerning the word وَجَاهِدْهُمْ بِهِ جِهَادًا كَبِيرًا ("and strive against them with the Qurʾān with a great striving"): "Islam." And he recited وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ ("and be harsh with them") and وَلْيَجِدُوا فِيكُمْ غِلْظَةً ("and let them find harshness in you"), and he said: "this is the great jihād."
