Tabari

Tafseer of The Criterion · Al-Furqaan · 25:40

And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.

Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

His statement وَكُلا ضَرَبْنَا لَهُ الأمْثَالَ — Allah, exalted be His praise, says: To each of these peoples whom We destroyed — whether those specifically named by us or those not named by us — We set forth the parables. That is to say: We laid out the examples for them, drew their attention to Our proofs against them, and excused Ourselves before them by means of lessons and admonitions. We destroyed no people until after We had fully granted them the claim of excuse.

In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes spoke.

    Mention of who said that:

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, from Maʿmar, from Qatāda, concerning His statement وَكُلا ضَرَبْنَا لَهُ الأمْثَالَ — he said: "Allah granted to each people the claim of excuse, and then He took vengeance upon them."

And His statement وَكُلا تَبَّرْنَا تَتْبِيرًا — Allah, exalted be His praise, says: And each of those whose affair We have mentioned to you, We have exterminated root and branch, utterly destroying them with punishment, putting them all to death.

In accordance with what we have said about this, the exegetes spoke.

    Mention of who said that:

Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, from al-Ḥasan, concerning His statement وَكُلا تَبَّرْنَا تَتْبِيرًا — he said: "Allah destroyed each of them with punishment, with total destruction."

Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Ibn Yamān related to us, from Ashʿath, from Jaʿfar, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr — concerning وَكُلا تَبَّرْنَا تَتْبِيرًا — he said: "Tatbīr is in Nabataean."

Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, saying: Ibn Jurayj said concerning His statement وَكُلا تَبَّرْنَا تَتْبِيرًا — he said: "With the punishment."
