And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.

أَمْ تَحْسَبُ — O Muḥammad — that most of these polytheists (mushrikīn) يَسْمَعُونَ what is recited to them and understand it, أَوْ يَعْقِلُونَ — the proofs of Allah which they have before their eyes and which they comprehend? إِنْ هُمْ إِلا كَالأنْعَامِ — He says: They are nothing but like the cattle that do not understand what is said to them and do not grasp it — indeed, they are even more astray than the cattle, for the cattle find their pasture and obey their owners, whereas these unbelievers (kuffār) do not obey their Lord, do not acknowledge the favor of the One who bestowed His favors upon them, but instead reject that favor and defy the One who created and fashioned them.
