And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger?

Allah — exalted be His praise — says: Truly, those who have cast the Qurʾān aside have certainly passed by the city upon which Allah poured down an evil rain — that is Sodom (Sadūm), the city of the people of Lūṭ. The evil rain is the stones which Allah rained down upon them and with which He destroyed them. As in the following:
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — concerning وَلَقَدْ أَتَوْا عَلَى الْقَرْيَةِ الَّتِي أُمْطِرَتْ مَطَرَ السَّوْءِ — he said: "Stones. And this is the city of the people of Lūṭ, and its name is Sodom." Ibn ʿAbbās said: "Five cities; Allah destroyed four of them and let the fifth remain — its name is Ṣaʿwa. Ṣaʿwa was not destroyed, because its inhabitants did not commit that deed. Sodom was the greatest of them and the city in which Lūṭ settled and from which he was sent. And Ibrāhīm — peace be upon him — called out to them loudly as a warning: O Sodom, there awaits you a day from Allah — I forbid you to expose yourselves to the punishment of Allah." It is asserted that Lūṭ was the nephew of Ibrāhīm — may the blessings of Allah descend upon them both.
And His word أَفَلَمْ يَكُونُوا يَرَوْنَهَا — Allah — exalted be His renown — says: Had these polytheists who passed by the city which was overwhelmed with the evil rain not beheld that city, and the punishment of Allah which descended upon its inhabitants on account of their denial of their messengers? So that they might have taken a lesson and reflected, and turned in repentance from their unbelief and their denial of Muḥammad ﷺ? بَلْ كَانُوا لا يَرْجُونَ نُشُورًا — Allah — exalted be His praise — says: They did not deny Muḥammad in what he had brought them from Allah because they had never seen the city which I described, but rather they denied him because they are a people who do not fear the resurrection (nushūr) after death — that is to say: they are not convinced of the punishment and the reward, and do not believe in the coming of the Hour, such that this would restrain them from the sins against Allah which they commit.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes spoke.
Mention of who said that:
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — concerning أَفَلَمْ يَكُونُوا يَرَوْنَهَا بَلْ كَانُوا لا يَرْجُونَ نُشُورًا — "resurrection": the rising up.
