Allah — exalted be His praise — says: And the people of Nūḥ: when they denied Our messengers and rejected the truth that had been brought to them, We drowned them in the flood. وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ لِلنَّاسِ آيَةً — He says: We made Our drowning of them and Our destruction of them an admonition and a lesson for mankind, so that they might take heed from it. وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلظَّالِمِينَ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًا — He says: And We have prepared for them — those who disbelieve in Allah — in the Hereafter a painful punishment (ʿadhāb), on top of the immediate chastisement that had already befallen them in this worldly life.
