And His statement وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا مِنَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ — Allah, exalted is His mention, says to His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ: Just as We made for you, O Muḥammad, enemies from among the polytheists of your people, so did We make for each of those whom We appointed as a prophet before you an enemy from among the polytheists of his people — so that you are not in this singularly distinguished apart from them. He says: so be patient with what befalls you from them, just as those of firm resolve (ūlū al-ʿazm) among Our messengers before you were patient.
In the same manner as we have explained this, the exegetes likewise spoke.
* Mention of who said this:
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, saying: Ibn ʿAbbās said: وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا مِنَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ — he said: it consoles Muḥammad ﷺ that He has made for him an enemy from among the criminals, just as He did for those before him.
And His statement وَكَفَى بِرَبِّكَ هَادِيًا وَنَصِيرًا — Allah, exalted is His mention, says to His Prophet: Your Lord, O Muḥammad, is sufficient for you as a Guide who guides you to the Truth and shows you the straight path, and as a Helper — that is: as Support for you against your enemies. He says: so let not your enemies among the polytheists strike fear into you, for I am supporting you against them. So be patient with My command and proceed with conveying My message to them.
