Tafseer of The Criterion · Al-Furqaan · 25:30
And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur'an as [a thing] abandoned."
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
Allah, exalted is His mention, says: The Messenger said on the day when the wrongdoer bites his hands: O Lord, my people whom You sent me to in order to call them to Your oneness took this Qurʾān as something rejected.
The exegetes differed over the meaning of their taking the Qurʾān as something rejected. Some said: their taking it as rejected (mahjūran) was their uttering evil words about it, and their claim that it is sorcery and that it is poetry.
* Mention of who said this:
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, he said: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najiḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word اتَّخَذُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا — he said: they utter nonsense about it, they say: it is sorcery.
Al-Qāsim related to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, he said: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ ... the verse: they utter nonsense about it. Mujāhid said: and His word مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ — he said: being arrogant on account of the town, holding wakeful gatherings (assemblies by night), uttering nonsense — that is to say: evil words about the Qurʾān that are not the Truth.
Al-Ḥārith related to me, he said: al-Ḥasan related to us, he said: Hushaym related to us, on the authority of Mughīra, on the authority of Ibrāhīm, concerning the word of Allah إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا — he said: they spoke about it that which is not the Truth; do you not see how a sick person speaks in his delirium and does not say the Truth?
And others said: rather, the meaning of this is: the report about the polytheists (mushrikīn) that they rejected the Qurʾān and turned away from it and did not listen to it.
* Mention of who said this:
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning the word of Allah وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا : they do not wish to listen to it, and when they are called to Allah they say no. And he recited وَهُمْ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ وَيَنْأَوْنَ عَنْهُ — he said: they forbid it, and they keep away from it.
Abū Jaʿfar said: This interpretation is the most fitting for the explanation of this, and that is because Allah reported about them that they said لا تَسْمَعُوا لِهَذَا الْقُرْآنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيهِ — and that is their rejection of it.
