Tabari

Tafseer of The Light · An-Noor · 24:16

And why, when you heard it, did you not say, "It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah]; this is a great slander"?

Allah, exalted be His mention, says: وَلَوْلا — you who went about spreading the slander that a group of you brought forth — إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ from the one who brought it — قُلْتُمْ that which it is not permitted for us to say, and which does not befit us to open our mouths with — سُبْحَانَكَ — exalted be You, O Lord, and absolved before You of what these people have brought forth — هَذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيمٌ — that is to say: this statement is a great fabrication and a gross slander.
