Tafseer of The Light · An-Noor · 24:14
And if it had not been for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have been touched for that [lie] in which you were involved by a great punishment

Allah, exalted be His mention, says: وَلَوْلا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ — upon you who occupied yourselves with the affair of ʿĀʾisha, spreading fornication and sin among yourselves — by His deferring His hastening punishment, وَرَحْمَتُهُ — His mercy upon you in granting you forgiveness فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ — by accepting your repentance for what you have done — لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا in which you immersed yourselves in her affair, already now in this world, عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ .
In accordance with what we have said concerning this also spoke the scholars of interpretation.
*Mention of those who said this:
Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning وَلَوْلا فَضْلُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُ : "This is for those who spoke and spread that talk: لَمَسَّكُمْ فِي مَا أَفَضْتُمْ فِيهِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ ."
