And they who carefully maintain their prayers -

And His statement: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَوَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ (And those who carefully maintain their prayers) — that is to say: those who attend to the times of their prayer and do not neglect it, nor are they distracted from it by other occupations until it slips away from them, but rather they keep guarding it until they perform it at its proper time.
In accordance with what we have said concerning this, the exegetes (ahl al-taʾwīl) also spoke.

Abū al-Sāʾib related to me, saying: Abū Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Muslim, on the authority of Masrūq, concerning وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَوَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ (And those who carefully maintain their prayers): at its appointed times.
Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Barqī related to us, saying: Ibn Abī Maryam related to us, saying: Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb informed us, saying: Ibn Zaḥr informed us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Muslim ibn Ṣubayḥ: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلَوَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ (And those who carefully maintain their prayers): he said: performing the ritual prayer (ṣalāh) at its proper time.
Others said: rather the meaning is: those who perform their prayers continually.
