Tafseer of The Believers · Al-Muminoon · 23:8
And they who are to their trusts and their promises attentive
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
Allah — exalted is His mention — says: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لأَمَانَاتِهِمْ (And those who, to the things entrusted to them) — these are the matters that have been entrusted to them — وَعَهْدِهِمْ (and their covenant) — these are the agreements that they have concluded with people — رَاعُونَ (are carefully attentive), that is to say: they safeguard them and do not let them come to ruin, but rather they fulfill them in all their parts.
The Qurʾān reciters (qurrāʾ) have differed over the reading of this word. The general majority of the Qurʾān reciters in the various cities, with the exception of Ibn Kathīr, read it as: وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لأَمَانَاتِهِمْ in the plural. Ibn Kathīr, however, read it as: "li-amānatihim" — in the singular.
The correct reading in this, according to our view, is: (li-amānātihim) in the plural, because of the consensus of the scholars among the Qurʾān reciters (qurrāʾ) upon that.
