And His statement أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُونَ ("These, they are the inheritors") — Allah, exalted is His mention, says: these who possess these qualities in the worldly life are the inheritors, on the Day of Resurrection, of the abodes of the inhabitants of the Fire in Paradise.
In the same sense as we have said is the report narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it has been explained by the exegetes.
Mention of the narration concerning that: Abū al-Sāʾib related to me, saying: Abū Muʿāwiya related to us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Abī Ṣāliḥ, on the authority of Abī Hurayra — he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "There is no one among you but that he has two abodes: an abode in Paradise and an abode in the Fire. And when he dies and enters the Fire, the inhabitants of Paradise inherit his abode." That is His statement أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُونَ .
Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq related to us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Abī Ṣāliḥ, on the authority of Abī Hurayra, concerning His statement أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُونَ — he said: "They inherit their abodes and the abodes of their brethren which would have been destined for them had they obeyed Allah."
Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of al-Aʿmash, on the authority of Abī Hurayra, concerning أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْوَارِثُونَ — he said: "They inherit their abodes and the abodes of their brethren which would have been destined for them had they obeyed Allah."
Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj — he said: "The inheritors of Paradise inherit it, أَوْرَثْتُمُوهَا ('you have been given it as an inheritance'), and the Paradise which We cause Our servants to inherit — they are alike." Ibn Jurayj said: Mujāhid said: "Whoever is among the inhabitants of Paradise inherits his housemates and the housemates of others besides him, and the abode of those who are among the inhabitants of the Fire — they inherit the inhabitants of the Fire. They thus have two abodes in Paradise and two housemates. This is so because there is for him an abode in Paradise and an abode in the Fire. As for the believer: he builds up his abode which is in Paradise and demolishes his abode in the Fire. As for the disbeliever: he demolishes his abode which is in Paradise and builds up his abode which is in the Fire." Ibn Jurayj said, on the authority of Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, on the authority of Mujāhid, that he said the same.
