Tabari

Tafseer of The Believers · Al-Muminoon · 23:83

We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before; this is not but legends of the former peoples."

Allah — exalted is His mention — says: They said: This promise has already been made to us — the promise that you, O Muḥammad, make to us — and our fathers before us were likewise promised by groups of people who claimed to be messengers of Allah before you, yet we have never seen it come to pass as a reality. (This is nothing), that is to say: this which you promise us of the resurrection after death, إِلا أَسَاطِيرُ الأوَّلِينَ (but the fables of the former peoples), that is to say: what the earlier ones wrote down in their books of tales and reports that possess no foundation of truth.
