1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

   Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: The matter is not as these polytheists (mushrikīn) suppose — that Our granting them wealth and sons is a favor by which We show them grace and a sign of Our satisfaction with them. No, but rather their hearts are immersed in blindness toward this Qurʾān. By "the immersion" (ghamra) He means: that which has flooded over their hearts and covered them, so that they do not comprehend the admonitions, lessons, and proofs that Allah has set down in His Book. By His words مِنْ هَذَا (of this) He means: of the Qurʾān.

   In the spirit of what we have said the exegetes also spoke.

   Mention of those who said this:

   Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words: فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا (in an immersion of this): he said: "In blindness toward this Qurʾān."

   Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words: فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا (in an immersion of this): he said: "Of the Qurʾān."

   Concerning His words: وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ (And they have deeds other than that, which they will perform): Allah, exalted be His remembrance, says: These unbelievers (kuffār) have deeds that are not pleasing to Allah — sins. مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ (besides that): besides the deeds of those who believe in Allah and those who harbor fear and awe of Him.

   He said: Ḥajjāj related to us, on the authority of Abū Jaʿfar, on the authority of al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, on the authority of Abū al-ʿĀliya, concerning the words: وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ — the whole verse — he said: "Deeds besides the truth."

   Ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā related to us, saying: Ibn Thawr related to us, on the authority of Maʿmar, on the authority of Qatāda: he said: "Allah mentioned those who tremble from the fear of their Lord, and those who give what they give while their hearts tremble with fear. Then He said concerning the unbelievers: بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ — he said: Besides the deeds that are spoken of: those who tremble from the fear of their Lord, and those who... and those who..."

   Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: ʿĪsā ibn Yūnus related to us, on the authority of al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm, on the authority of Mujāhid: he said: "Deeds which they must inevitably perform."

   ʿAlī ibn Sahl related to us, saying: Zayd ibn Abī al-Zarqāʾ related to us, on the authority of Ḥammād ibn Salama, on the authority of Ḥumayd: he said: "I asked al-Ḥasan about the word of Allah: وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ — he said: Deeds that they have not yet performed but which they will perform."

   Yūnus related to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said concerning the words: وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ — he said: "He inevitably had to complete the rest of his deeds and be cast into the Fire for them."

   Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, on the authority of al-Thawrī, on the authority of al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning the words: وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ — he said: "Deeds which they must inevitably perform."

   يقول تعالى ذكره: ما الأمر كما يحسب هؤلاء المشركون، من أن إمدادناهم بما نمدّهم به من مال وبنين، بخير نسوقه بذلك إليهم والرضا منا عنهم، ولكن قلوبهم في غمرة عمى عن هذا القرآن. وعنى بالغمرة: ما غمر قلوبهم فغطاها عن فهم ما أودع الله كتابه من المواعظ والعبر والحجج. وعنى بقوله: ( مِنْ هَذَا ) من القرآن. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. *ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء ، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: ( فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا ) قال: في عمى من هذا القرآن. حدثنا القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثني حجاج، عن ابن جريج، عن مجاهد، في قوله: ( فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا ) قال: من القرآن. وقوله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ) يقول تعالى ذكره: ولهؤلاء الكفار أعمال لا يرضاها الله من المعاصي.( مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ ) يقول: من دون أعمال أهل الإيمان بالله ، وأهل التقوى والخشية له. وبنحو الذي قلنا في ذلك قال أهل التأويل. *ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا حكام، عن عنبسة، عن محمد بن عبد الرحمن، عن القاسم بن أبي بزة، عن مجاهد: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ) قال: الخطايا. حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى; وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء ، جميعا عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، قوله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ ) قال: الحق. حدثنا عليّ بن سهل، قال: ثنا حجاج، عن ابن جُرَيج، عن مجاهد، قوله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ ) قال: خطايا من دون ذلك الحقّ. قال ثنا حجاج، عن أبي جعفر، عن الربيع بن أنس، عن أبي العالية، في قوله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ ). .. الآية، قال: أعمال دُون الحق. حدثنا ابن عبد الأعلى، قال: ثنا ابن ثور، عن معمر، عن قَتادة، قال: ذكر الله الذين هم من خشية ربهم مشفقون والذين يؤتون ما آتوا وقلوبهم وجلة، ثم قال للكفار: ( بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ) قال: من دون الأعمال التي منها قوله: مِنْ خَشْيَةِ رَبِّهِمْ مُشْفِقُونَ والذين، والذين. حدثني القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثنا عيسى بن يونس، عن العلاء بن عبد الكريم، عن مجاهد، قال: أعمال لا بد لهم من أن يعملوها. حدثنا عليّ بن سهل، قال: ثنا زيد بن أبي الزرقاء، عن حماد بن سلمة، عن حميد، قال: سألت الحسن عن قول الله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ) قال: أعمال لم يعملوها سيعملونها. حدثني يونس، قال: أخبرنا ابن وهب، قال: قال ابن زيد، في قوله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ) قال: لم يكن له بد من أن يستوفي بقية عمله، ويصلى به. حدثنا الحسن، قال: أخبرنا عبد الرزاق، عن الثوري، عن العلاء بن عبد الكريم، عن مجاهد، في قوله: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ) قال: أعمال لا بدّ لهم من أن يعملوها. حدثنا عمرو، قال: ثنا مروان بن معاوية، عن العلاء بن عبد الكريم، عن مجاهد، في قول الله تبارك وتعالى: ( وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِنْ دُونِ ذَلِكَ ) قال: أعمال لا بدّ لهم من أن يعملوها.
