Tafseer of The Believers · Al-Muminoon · 23:55
Do they think that what We extend to them of wealth and children
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
And His word: أَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ — The Exalted — exalted be His remembrance — says: Do these factions, who have divided their religion into books, suppose that what We grant them in the fleeting earthly life of possessions and sons — نُسَارِعُ لَهُمْ — that is to say: We hasten for them toward the good deeds of the Hereafter and rush therein for them? And "mā" in His word: أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُمْ بِهِ is in the naṣb (accusative), because it has the meaning of "alladhī" (that which). بَل لا يَشْعُرُونَ — The Exalted — exalted be His remembrance — says, refuting them therein: It is not so — rather they do not realize that My continual support of them with what I grant them therein is only a respite and a gradual leading-on (to their ruin).
The exegetes are also in agreement with what we have said.
*Mention of those who said this:*
Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — all on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid: أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُمْ — he said: what We grant them.
