And His word: إِنْ هِيَ إِلا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا (There is only our worldly life) — that is to say: there is no life except our worldly life that we now lead. (We die and we live) — that is to say: those among us who are living die and do not return again to life, and others among us are born and come into the world alive. (And we will not be resurrected) — they said: we will not be resurrected after death.
As Yūnus related to me; he said: Ibn Wahb informed us; he said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning the word of Allah: إِنْ هِيَ إِلا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَبْعُوثِينَ — he said: they say: there is no Hereafter and no resurrection; they deny the resurrection. They say: this is only our worldly life, then we die and are not made alive again. These die and those are made alive; they say: people are like the crops — this is mown down and that sprouts up. They say: these die and others come. (And those who disbelieved said: shall we point you to a man who will inform you that when you have been completely torn to pieces, you will then surely be in a new creation). (The Hour will not come to us; say: Yes, by my Lord, it will surely come to you).
