And We brought forth for you thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines in which for you are abundant fruits and from which you eat.

He, exalted be His remembrance, says: by means of the water that We sent down from the sky, We brought forth for you gardens of date-palms and grapevines. لَكُمْ فِيهَا (for you therein) — He says: for you in the gardens are many fruits. وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ (and of them you eat) — He says: and of the fruits you eat; it is possible that the pronoun "hā" refers to "the gardens," and it is possible that it refers to "the date-palms and the grapevines." He, exalted be His praise, singled out the gardens which He mentioned in this verse by describing them as [composed] of date-palms and grapevines — and not by describing them with the rest of the fruits of the earth — because these two kinds of fruit were the foremost fruits of the Ḥijāz and what is connected to it; for the date-palms belonged to the people of Medina, and the grapevines to the people of al-Ṭāʾif. He reminded the people of what they knew of Allah's blessing upon them, through what He bestowed upon them of its fruits.
