Allah, exalted be His praise, says: The people became divided in their religion to which Allah had commanded them and to which He had invited them; they became parties therein: the Jews became Jews, the Christians became Christians, and the idols were worshipped. Then He informed, exalted be His praise, of that to which they would return — that the return of all the adherents of religions is to Him — and thereby He threatened the aloof and the erring among them, and informed them that He was watching over them and that He would requite them all: the doer of good according to his good deed, and the doer of evil according to his evil deed.
Thus likewise read the reports concerning the interpretation of His words (وَتَقَطَّعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ).

Yūnus related to me; he said: Ibn Wahb informed us; he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His words (وَتَقَطَّعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ): "Taqaṭṭaʿū means: they differed among themselves over the religion."
