And We did not make the prophets forms not eating food, nor were they immortal [on earth].

Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says: We did not make the messengers whom We sent before you, O Muhammad, to the bygone communities into جَسَدًا لا يَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعَامَ (bodies that do not eat food) — that is to say: We did not make them into angels who do not eat food, but rather We made them bodies like you, who do eat food.
As Bashr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَمَا جَعَلْنَاهُمْ جَسَدًا لا يَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعَامَ: he said: We did not give them bodies except to eat food.
It was related to me on the authority of al-Ḥusayn, who said: I heard Abā Muʿādh say: ʿUbayd informed us, he said: I heard al-Ḍaḥḥāk say concerning وَمَا جَعَلْنَاهُمْ جَسَدًا لا يَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعَامَ: He said: I did not give them bodies without souls in them that do not eat food, but rather We gave them bodies with souls in them that do eat food.
Abū Jaʿfar said: And He said وَمَا جَعَلْنَاهُمْ جَسَدًا in the singular, even though it is a description of a group. This, however, is permissible because "body" (jasad) has the meaning of a singular verbal noun (maṣdar), just as one says in common usage: "We did not make them a creature that does not eat."
And His word وَمَا كَانُوا خَالِدِينَ — He says: Nor were they lords who do not die and do not perish. They were human beings, bodies, and they died. This is because the unbelievers said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as Allah has reported concerning them: لَنْ نُؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتَّى تَفْجُرَ لَنَا مِنَ الأَرْضِ يَنْبُوعًا up to أَوْ تَأْتِيَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْمَلائِكَةِ قَبِيلا — Allah, blessed and exalted, said to them: We did not do that with anyone before you, that We should do it with you. We used only to send to them men to whom We revealed, just as We have sent to you a messenger to whom We reveal Our command and Our prohibition.
And in accordance with what we have said, the exegetes of the Qurʾān spoke.
Mention of who said this:
Bashr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَمَا كَانُوا خَالِدِينَ: that is to say: death was inevitable for them.
