And We sent not before you, [O Muhammad], except men to whom We revealed [the message], so ask the people of the message if you do not know.

Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says to His Prophet: We did not send before you, O Muḥammad, to any community of the communities that passed away before your community, any messenger other than men like them, to whom We revealed what We willed to reveal to them of Our command and Our prohibition — not angels. Why, then, would they be able to reject the fact that We have sent you to them, while you are a man like all the messengers who were sent before you to their communities?
And His word: فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ (So ask the people of the Remembrance, if you do not know) — He says this to those who said in their conversations among themselves about Muḥammad ﷺ: "Is this anything but a human being like you?" If you do not acknowledge the matter of the messengers who existed before Muḥammad and are ignorant about it — whether they were humans or angels — then ask the people of the Books of the Torah and the Gospel; they will inform you about it.
As Bashr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ — he said: Ask the people of the Torah and the Gospel. Abū Jaʿfar said: I think he said: they will inform you about it, that the messengers were men who ate food and walked through the markets. And it has been said: the people of the Remembrance are the people of the Qurʾān.
Mention of who said this:
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsī related to me, he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ related to me, he said: Mūsā ibn ʿUthmān related to us, on the authority of Jābir al-Juʿfī, who said: When فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ was revealed, ʿAlī said: "We are the people of the Remembrance."
Yūnus related to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ: the people of the Qurʾān — and the Remembrance is the Qurʾān. And he recited: إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ (Verily, it is We who have sent down the Remembrance, and verily, We are its Guardians).
