And [mention] Noah, when he called [to Allah] before [that time], so We responded to him and saved him and his family from the great flood.

Allah, exalted is His remembrance, says: Remember, O Muḥammad, Nūḥ, when he called upon his Lord before you, and before Ibrāhīm and Lūṭ, and asked Us to destroy his people — those who accused Allah of lying concerning what He had announced to them of His warnings, and who accused Nūḥ of lying concerning what he had brought them of the truth from his Lord. وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَبِّ لا تَذَرْ عَلَى الأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا (And Nūḥ said: My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any inhabitant from among the disbelievers). We answered his supplication, وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ — by his "family members" (ahl) He means: the believers among his children and their wives مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ (from the great distress). By the "great distress" He means: the punishment that was sent down upon the deceivers, through the flood and the drowning. The distress (karb) is the intensity of grief. One says in this connection: this has caused me distress — it distresses me, with great distress.
