Tafseer of The Prophets · Al-Anbiyaa · 21:57

وَتَٱللَّهِ لَأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَٰمَكُم بَعْدَ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ مُدْبِرِينَ

And [I swear] by Allah, I will surely plan against your idols after you have turned and gone away."

    It has been related that Ibrāhīm, may the blessings of Allah be upon him, swore this oath secretly and hidden from his people, and that none heard it from him except the one who disclosed it when they said: "Who has done this to our gods? He is surely among the wrongdoers!" They then said: "We heard a young man mention them who is called Ibrāhīm."

    * Mention of who said that: Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr related to me, saying: Abū ʿĀṣim related to us, saying: ʿĪsā related to us; and al-Ḥārith related to me, saying: al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: Warqāʾ related to us — both on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word وَتَاللَّهِ لَأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَامَكُم : he said: this is the saying of Ibrāhīm when his people invited him to go with them to a festival of theirs, but he refused and said: "I am sick." A man of them who stayed behind heard his threat against their idols, and he is the one who says: سَمِعْنَا فَتًى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ .

    Al-Qāsim related to us, saying: al-Ḥusayn related to us, saying: Ḥajjāj related to me, on the authority of Ibn Jurayj, on the authority of Mujāhid: the same.

    Bishr related to us, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word وَتَاللَّهِ لَأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَامَكُم : he said: We hold that he said this at a time when they did not yet hear him, after they had turned their backs on him.

    ذكر أن إبراهيم صلوات الله عليه حلف بهذه اليمين في سرّ من قومه وخفاء، وأنه لم يسمع ذلك منه إلا الذي أفشاه عليه حين قالوا. من فعل هذا بآلهتنا إنه لمن الظالمين، فقالوا: سمعنا فتى يذكرهم يقال له إبراهيم. *ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثني محمد بن عمرو، قال: ثنا أبو عاصم، قال: ثنا عيسى وحدثني الحارث، قال: ثنا الحسن، قال: ثنا ورقاء جميعا، عن ابن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهد، في قوله ( وَتَاللَّهِ لأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَامَكُمْ ) قال: قول إبراهيم حين استتبعه قومه إلى عيد لهم فأبى وقال: إني سقيم، فسمع منه وعيد أصنامهم رجل منهم استأخر، وهو الذي يقول سَمِعْنَا فَتًى يَذْكُرُهُمْ يُقَالُ لَهُ إِبْرَاهِيمُ . حدثنا القاسم، قال: ثنا الحسين، قال: ثني حجاج، عن ابن جُرَيج، عن مجاهد، مثله. حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله ( وَتَاللَّهِ لأَكِيدَنَّ أَصْنَامَكُمْ ) قال: نرى أنه قال ذلك حيث لم يسمعوه بعد أن تولَّوا مدبرين.
