He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error."

Verily لَقَدْ كُنتُمْ — O people — أَنتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ , by your worship of it, فِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ . He says: in straying from the path of the Truth and in deviation from the straight way — mubīn, that is to say: clear to whoever considers it with his intellect, that you are thus in deviation from the Truth.
