Tafseer of The Prophets · Al-Anbiyaa · 21:103

They will not be grieved by the greatest terror, and the angels will meet them, [saying], "This is your Day which you have been promised" -

Tabari (1 passage)

  1. Full Dutch translation of Tabari's text

The scholars of exegesis differed concerning which tremendous terror (al-fazaʿ al-akbar) is meant here. Some said: it is the Fire when it closes over its inhabitants.

Mention of those who said this:

We were related to by Abū Hishām, who said: Yaḥyā ibn Yamān related to us, who said: Sufyān related to us, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, concerning لا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الأكْبَرُ: he said: "The Fire when it closes over its inhabitants."

We were related to by al-Qāsim, who said: al-Ḥusayn related to us, who said: Ḥajjāj related to me, who said: Ibn Jurayj said concerning His word لا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الأَكْبَرُ: he said: "When Hell (jahannam) is closed up" — and he said: "When death is slaughtered."

Others said: rather, it is the final Blast of the Trumpet (al-nafkha al-ākhira).

Mention of those who said this:

It was related to me by Muḥammad ibn Saʿd, who said: my father related to me, who said: my uncle related to me, who said: my father related to me, on the authority of his father, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning His word لا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الأكْبَرُ: he meant the final Blast of the Trumpet.

Others said: rather, it is when the servant is commanded to be led to the Fire.

Mention of those who said this:

We were related to by Ibn Ḥumayd, who said: Ḥakkām related to us, on the authority of ʿAnbasa, on the authority of a man, on the authority of al-Ḥasan, concerning لا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الأكْبَرُ: he said: "The departure of the servant at the moment he is commanded to go to the Fire."

The most correct view in this matter, in my opinion, is the opinion of the one who said: it is at the final Blast of the Trumpet — for whoever is not terrified by that great terror and is secure from it has all the more right to not be terrified by what comes after it; and whoever is terrified by it is not secure from being terrified by what comes after it.

And His word وَتَتَلَقَّاهُمُ الْمَلائِكَةُ means: "And the angels welcome them and congratulate them, saying: هَذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ — This is your day which you were promised" — the honoring of Allah, the generous bestowal, and the abundant reward for what you exerted yourselves in the world for the sake of Allah in His obedience.

In accordance with what we have said concerning this, Ibn Zayd also spoke.

It was related to me by Yūnus, who said: Ibn Wahb informed us, who said: Ibn Zayd said concerning His word هَذَا يَوْمُكُمُ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ: he said: "This [occurs] before they enter the Garden (janna)."
