Exposition of the interpretation of the word of the Exalted: قَالَ يَا هَارُونُ مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوا (20:92)
The Glorified says: Mūsā said to his brother Hārūn, after he had finished addressing his people and reproaching them for what they had done wrong: "O Hārūn, what prevented you — when you saw that they were straying from their religion and that they denied Allah and worshipped the calf — from following me?"
The scholars of interpretation (ahl al-tafsīr) differed concerning the reason why Mūsā rebuked his brother for failing to follow him. Some said: he rebuked him because he did not depart with those who obeyed him, in his trail, as he had been commanded.

We were related to by Ibn Ḥumayd, who said: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, on the authority of Ḥakīm ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When the people said لَنْ نَبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفِينَ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَى — "We will not cease to remain devoted to it until Mūsā returns to us" — Hārūn remained with those who had followed him among the Muslims and who had not fallen into the trial, while those who worshipped the calf remained at the worship of the calf. And Hārūn feared that if he were to set out with the Muslims who were with him, Mūsā would say to him: فَرَّقْتَ بَيْنَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ وَلَمْ تَرْقُبْ قَوْلِي — "You have caused division among the Banū Isrāʾīl and you have not observed my word." For Hārūn was in awe of Mūsā and obeyed him.
It was related to me by Yūnus, who said: Ibn Wahb informed us, who said: Ibn Zayd said, concerning His word مَا مَنَعَكَ إِذْ رَأَيْتَهُمْ ضَلُّوا أَلا تَتَّبِعَنِي — "What prevented you, when you saw them straying, from following me?" — He said: "Leaving them."
Others said: rather, he rebuked him because he had not endeavored to set right what the people had corrupted.
