   Explanation of the word of Allah the Exalted: فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى (Verse 62)

   (They disputed among themselves over their affair and held a secret consultation.)

   Allah the Exalted says: The sorcerers disputed among themselves over their affair.

   Their mutual dispute consisted, it is reported, of the following: some of them said to others — as Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning His word فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى : the sorcerers said among themselves: if this is a sorcerer we shall overcome him; but if it is something from heaven, then it has an authority above us.

   Others said: no, it is that some of them said to the others: "This is not the word of a sorcerer."

   Those who said that are mentioned: Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, he said: I was informed from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: every sorcerer gathered his ropes and staves, and Mūsā went out with his brother who was leaning on his staff, until he arrived at the assembly. Pharaoh was upon his throne with the nobles of his kingdom around him, and the people crowded around him. Mūsā said to the sorcerers when he came to them: وَيْلَكُمْ لا تَفْتَرُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا فَيُسْحِتَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرَى — whereupon the sorcerers debated among themselves and some of them said to the others: "This is not the word of a sorcerer."

   His word وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى — Allah the Exalted says: the sorcerers concealed their mutual consultation.

   Then the scholars differed concerning the secret words which they kept concealed. Some said: those were the words of some of them to the others: if this is a sorcerer we shall overcome him; but if it is something of the heavenly order then he will overcome us.

   Others said: it concerned the following — as Ibn Ḥumayd related to us, he said: Salama related to us, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq, he said: I was informed from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said: some of them pointed to others to whisper secretly: إِنْ هَذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا (Truly, these two are sorcerers who wish to drive you out of your land by their sorcery).

   Mūsā related to me, he said: ʿAmr related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī, concerning فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى out of the hearing of Mūsā and Hārūn; they said in their secret consultation: إِنْ هَذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا وَيَذْهَبَا بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ الْمُثْلَى — they said: these two are sorcerers — and by "these two" they meant Mūsā and Hārūn — two sorcerers who wish to drive you out of your land by their sorcery.

   As Bishr related to us, he said: Yazīd related to us, he said: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda, concerning إِنْ هَذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا : namely Mūsā and Hārūn — peace be upon them both.

   القول في تأويل قوله تعالى : فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى (62) يقول تعالى ذكره: فتنازع السحرة أمرهم بينهم. وكان تنازعهم أمرهم بينهم فيما ذكر أن قال بعضهم لبعض، ما حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله ( فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى ) قال السحرة بينهم: إن كان هذا ساحرا فإنا سنغلبه، وإن كان من السماء فله أمر. وقال آخرون: بل هو أن بعضهم قال لبعض: ما هذا القول بقول ساحر. ذكر من قال ذلك: حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا سلمة، عن ابن إسحاق، قال: حُدثت عن وهب بن منبه، قال: جمع كلّ ساحر حباله وعصيه، وخرج موسى معه أخوه يتكئ على عصاه، حتى أتى المجمع، وفرعون في مجلسه، معه أشراف أهل مملكته، قد استكف له الناس، فقال موسى للسحرة حين جاءهم: وَيْلَكُمْ لا تَفْتَرُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا فَيُسْحِتَكُمْ بِعَذَابٍ وَقَدْ خَابَ مَنِ افْتَرَى فترادّ السحرة بينهم، وقال بعضهم لبعض: ما هذا بقول ساحر. وقوله ( وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى ) يقول تعالى ذكره: وأسرّوا السحرة المناجاة بينهم. ثم اختلف أهل العلم في السرار الذي أسروه، فقال بعضهم: هو قول بعضهم لبعض: إن كان هذا ساحرا فإنا سنغلبه، وإن كان من أمر السماء فإنه سيغلبنا. وقال آخرون :في ذلك ما حدثنا ابن حميد، قال: ثنا سلمة، عن ابن إسحاق قال: حُدثت عن وهب بن منبه، قال: أشار بعضهم إلى بعض بتناج ( إِنْ هَذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا ). حدثني موسى، قال: ثنا عمرو، قال: ثنا أسباط، عن السديّ( فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَى ) من دون موسى وهارون، قالوا في نجواهم ( إِنْ هَذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا وَيَذْهَبَا بِطَرِيقَتِكُمُ الْمُثْلَى ) قالوا: إن هذان لساحران، يَعْنُونَ بقولهم: إن هذان موسى وهارون، لساحران يريدان أن يخرجاكم من أرضكم بسحرهما . كما حدثنا بشر، قال: ثنا يزيد، قال: ثنا سعيد، عن قتادة، قوله ( إِنْ هَذَانِ لَسَاحِرَانِ يُرِيدَانِ أَنْ يُخْرِجَاكُمْ مِنْ أَرْضِكُمْ بِسِحْرِهِمَا ) موسى وهارون صلى الله عليهما.
