Indeed, it has been revealed to us that the punishment will be upon whoever denies and turns away.' "

His statement فَأْتِيَاهُ فَقُولا إِنَّا رَسُولا رَبِّكَ (20:48): we have been sent to you as messengers to command you to send the Children of Israel with us — so send them with us and do not torment them by imposing hard labor upon them. قَدْ جِئْنَاكَ بِآيَةٍ — a miracle — مِنْ رَبِّكَ — as proof that He has sent us to you for that purpose; if you do not believe us in what we say to you, we will show it to you. وَالسَّلامُ عَلَى مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الْهُدَى (and peace be upon him who follows the guidance): that is to say, safety is for whoever follows the guidance of Allah, which is His declaration. It is said: al-salāmu ʿalā man ittabaʿa al-hudā and li-man ittabaʿa — both have the same meaning.
