Tafseer of Taa-Haa · Taa-Haa · 20:126
[Allah] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
Important: The Arabic source text is always authoritative. This translation is a study aid and has not been verified by scholars — do not use it as a basis for religious proof or for deriving rulings (ahkam). When in doubt, always consult the Arabic text and a qualified scholar.
The explanation of the word of Allah, the Exalted: قَالَ كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى (He said: Thus did Our signs come to you, but you forgot them. And thus today you will be forgotten.) (126)
His word قَالَ كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا — Allah, exalted be His praise, says: Allah said at that moment to the one who had said لِمَ حَشَرْتَنِي أَعْمَى وَقَدْ كُنْتُ بَصِيرًا (Why have You raised me up blind when I used to see?): "I have done this to you and raised you up blind, just as My signs came to you" — that is: His proofs, His indications, and His clear expositions in His Book — "and you forgot them," that is: you left them behind and turned away from them, you did not believe in them and did not act according to them. By His word كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ He means: thus did they come to you. His word وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى — He says: Just as you forgot Our signs in the world and left them behind and turned away from them, so do We forget you today and leave you behind in the Fire.
The scholars of tafsīr have differed over the meaning of His word وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى . Some have said the same as we have said.
Mention of who said that:
Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Aḥmasī related to us, saying: Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd related to us, saying: Sufyān al-Thawrī related to us, on the authority of Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, on the authority of Abū Ṣāliḥ, concerning His word وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى : he said: "In the Fire."
Al-Ḥasan related to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us, on the authority of Ibn Abī Najīḥ, on the authority of Mujāhid, concerning His word كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا : he said: "You left them behind." وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى : "Thus are you left behind today in the Fire."
From Qatāda it is related what Bishr related to me, saying: Yazīd related to us, saying: Saʿīd related to us, on the authority of Qatāda concerning قَالَ كَذَلِكَ أَتَتْكَ آيَاتُنَا فَنَسِيتَهَا وَكَذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ تُنْسَى : he said: "He is forgotten with respect to good and not forgotten with respect to evil." This statement of Qatāda is related in meaning to what Abū Ṣāliḥ and Mujāhid said, for leaving them behind in the Fire is the greatest evil for them.
