And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.

The explanation of the word of Allah, the Exalted: وَكَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي مَنْ أَسْرَفَ وَلَمْ يُؤْمِنْ بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِ وَلَعَذَابُ الآخِرَةِ أَشَدُّ وَأَبْقَى (And thus do We recompense whoever is excessive and does not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.) (127)
Allah, exalted be His praise, says: And thus do We recompense — that is to say: thus do We requite — whoever is excessive and has been disobedient to his Lord, and has not believed in His messengers and His Books, by making him lead a straitened existence in the intermediate abode (barzakh), as We have explained earlier. وَلَعَذَابُ الآخِرَةِ أَشَدُّ وَأَبْقَى — He, exalted be His praise, says: The punishment in the Hereafter is for them more severe than what We have promised them in the grave of the straitened existence, and more enduring — that is to say: it lasts longer, for it has no end and no limit.
