And His statement (وَأَنَّكَ لا تَظْمَأُ فِيهَا) — the Qurʾān reciters differed concerning its recitation. Some reciters of Medina and Kūfa recited it with kasra: "wa-innaka," as a conjunction to His statement (إنَّ لَكَ). And some reciters of Medina and the majority of the reciters of Kūfa and Baṣra recited it as "wa-annaka," with fatḥa on the alif, as a conjunction to the "an" in His statement (أَلَّا تَجُوعَ فِيهَا وَلَا تَعْرَى). They directed its interpretation toward the meaning: that you have this and that. This recitation is the more agreeable of the two recitations to me, because Allah — blessed and exalted is His mention — promised that to Adam when He caused him to dwell in the Garden. That it is a conjunction to "an lā tajūʿa" is more fitting than that it should be the predicate of a new subject, even though the other is not far removed from correctness.
And the meaning of His statement (لَا تَظْمَأُ فِيهَا) is: you suffer no thirst in the Garden as long as you dwell in it. (وَلَا تَضْحَى) — He says: you are not exposed to the sun so that its heat would harm you, as Ibn Abī Rabīʿa said:
"She saw a man — when the sun strikes him, he stands exposed to it, and toward evening the cold seizes him."
And similar to what we have said concerning this, the people of exegesis said.
