His word فَوَسْوَسَ إِلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ — he says: the devil (shayṭān) whispered to Ādam and spoke to him. قَالَ يَا آدَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ — he says: he said to him: Shall I lead you to a tree of which it holds that, if you eat from it, you will live on forever and never die, and you will rule with a kingdom that never ends or perishes.
As Mūsā related to me, he said: ʿAmr related to us, he said: Asbāṭ related to us, on the authority of al-Suddī: قَالَ يَا آدَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَى شَجَرَةِ الْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍ لا يَبْلَى ("He said: O Ādam! Shall I lead you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that never perishes?") — if you eat from it, you will be an angel equal to Allah; أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ ("or you both become of the eternal ones") — so that you two will never die.
