    The explanation of the meaning of His statement, the Exalted:

(O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you over the worlds.) (122)

Abū Jaʿfar said: This verse is an admonition from Allah — exalted be His remembrance — directed to the Jews who dwelt amidst the place of refuge (the city of the Hijra) of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it is a reminder from Him to them of the benefits which He had bestowed upon them in former times through what He had wrought for their forefathers — by which He seeks to move them toward His religion and toward holding His Messenger Muḥammad ﷺ to be true. So He said: O Children of Israel, remember the benefits which I granted you, and My favors to you, and how I saved you from the hand of your enemy Pharaoh and his people, and how I sent down upon you the manna and the quails in your wandering in the wilderness (tīh), and how I gave you firm footing in the lands after you had been humiliated and subjugated, and how I chose the Messengers from your midst, and how I preferred you over the world amidst which you lived — in the days when you were in obedience to Me — (14) by following My Messenger whom I sent to you, and holding him to be true together with that which he brought you from Me; and leave off persisting in error and folly.

We have already mentioned previously the favors which Allah bestowed upon the Children of Israel, and the meanings of which He — exalted be His praise — reminded them concerning His benefits to them, as well as the world over which they were preferred — all of that earlier, with the reports and the proofs. We therefore deemed it undesirable to lengthen the book by repeating this, since the meaning thereof in this place and in that place is one and the same. (15)

    Footnotes:

    (14) If His statement has not dropped out here: "and I admonish you by following My Messenger...", then His statement "by following My Messenger" is connected to His statement at the beginning of the address: "remember the benefits which I granted you...".
